Bottega combines Italian flavour with Australian sensibility to create a unique dining experience in the heart of Little Italy. Daniel Schelbert is the king of the cucina, creating trattoria-style fare like grilled baby calamari with kipfler potatoes and black olive salad for starters; mains like the stracotto of lamb rack on tomato peperonico, buckwheat and pecorino polenta; and desserts like Italian trifle with limoncello and blackberry. The sleek, simple and stylish dining room lets the food remain the main attraction and there is a small private dining room for intimate gatherings.

Very London or New York, this minimalist, super suave restaurant, designed by Sydney's Ian Halliday, is splendid. Walk in off the Collins Street level to the long narrow bar, for light lunches, coffee and drinks ascend to the restaurant. The interior design of this deep narrow space is about spots of light, the vast whiteness broken up by one textured grey wall. Stainless steel tubes, spectacularly rise three floors in the stairwell. Located right next to the theatres.

Frequented by legal and business high-flyers, this basement restaurant does a roaring lunch trade fuelled by rustic northern Italian dishes. Specials are recited by the staff and a fine wine list complements the menu. With 100 wines on the main list, 40 on the reserve list and 25 by the glass, Caterina's is certainly serious about its tipple. It's also dedicated to serving authentic central and northern Italian dishes like risotto of pork sausage, spinach and mushrooms.

Among the sleek boutiques of Greville Street, this polished restaurant is right at home. With contemporary cuisine and accessible wines, it offers a combination of semi-formal dining and sophisticated tippling. Fog, a brand new glamour puss on groovy Greville Street where Blu Pols once throbbed in the mid-'90s. Sleek and sexy, all black gloss pillars and long shiny bar, black stained timber floors and flashes of colour from the catwalk carpet and stunning red fibre orb light fittings, Fog is anything but cloudy. The two-level space has always made a good restaurant layout (there's also a fine courtyard at the side and, apparently, a sexy little bar out the back too); the street level for drinks and coffee, four steps up to the long dining area.

Kobe Jones takes the Japanese food that most of us are now familiar with and puts what they describe as a Californian twist on it. This means playing free and easy with familiar favourites, offering a Western spin on classic sushi rolls and distinctly Japanese flavours. The restaurant space is elegantly restrained, with neutral tones dragging the eye towards the city and water views from its elevated Docklands digs. The slick aesthetics extend to the plate, where bite-sized pieces of sushi neatly recline against minimalist garnishes.

Housed in a former amusement parlour, hence its intriguing name, the only remnant of Magic City Cafe and Wine Bar’s former self is the large neon sign. Open since 2003, Magic City’s split-level interior is one of cool sophistication with exposed brick walls, timber table tops, natural fibre lamp shades and dark timber panelling. Only a short walk from Camberwell Station, Magic City’s menu is designed for flexibility allowing for a quick breakfast or a leisurely dinner and everything in between. Part of the attraction of Magic City is that it's a rather hip meeting spot for after-work or pre-dinner drinks. On Friday nights it's jumping. A refreshing Hoegaarden white beer or two at the bar before a bottle of Domain Chandon rose to enjoy with the small dishes at your table. Nice way to finish the working week. Chef Martin Dekarte has taken over in the kitchen from former head chef James Tan, however the cuisine still remains an East-West fusion with a contemporary edge.

Fitzroy Street certainly fluctuates from gritty to funky to classy with hip hotspots like Circa beside pubs, bars and Seven Elevens, but there Sapore stands, on a mixed block at the beach end of the street, exuding a contagious air of cosmopolitan charm. With windows opening out on to the sidewalk and outdoor seating available in the stark black and white decorated downstairs area, the dining vibe is exclusive but be prepared that service might be curt if you hit a busy time. Sapore means taste or flavour in Italian and the menu does not shy away from flavourful variations on modern Italian cuisine with a concentration on steak and seafood.

Small Block is the kind of place only the hip and happening East Brunswick locals know about. The interior is kitsch with red vinyl chairs, and the food is hearty and healthy. Wash it down with a freshly brewed coffee or one of the fine juices on offer. The award winning barista service is the standout - they even know how to make a decaf latte taste good. Small Block is right at home this side of Lygon Street. The locals love it and this popular haunt serves up an all day breakfast that is the talk of Brunswick. Sit inside at the window bench or go outside and sit on one of the funky street-side tables and order a second latte.

Terra Rossa is made up of a restaurant, bar and, for something a little different, a cheese room. Just make sure you don't totally lose yourself in the latter, nibbling on the cheeses with indecently rat-like enthusiasm, as the restaurant menu is not to be missed. It's made up of a vast array of treats, including a breakfast menu, an extensive tapas selection and an earthy, contemporary Italian dinner menu. The cheese room houses a great variety of cheeses to taste, preferably with a bottle of wine carefully chosen from the bar.

The Deanery is all about the wine. If you have an extensive collection of your own you can store it in The Deanery's temperature and light controlled cellar, then call up a bottle to have with dinner. The food is mod-Mediterranean and, like a fine bottle of wine, is worth enjoying with friends. If you don't own your own, The Deanery has a wine list few establishments can rival.

George Calombaris has a reputation around town as an avant-garde chef whose culinary creations at the now-defunct Reserve have both raised eyebrows and prompted belly-patting contentment. Traditional is not a word that the foodie press is used to associating with him but that is what he is offering at his own venture, albeit with his own less-conventional spin. At The Press Club, Calombaris aims to recreate the traditional Greek food of his childhood and inject it with a bit of modern pizzazz. Thus, the menu might include traditional spit-roasted meat alongside a not-so-usual kadefi of smoked oysters and caramelised onions with a Greek salad smoothie. The restaurant provides an elegant space in which to enjoy these innovative creations, with dark leather and subtle lighting defying all expectations of a stereotypical blue-and-white-clad Greek restaurant.
